STAY TUNED
What is the Meaning of the English Expression
STAY TUNED?
stay tuned
Definition
Before digital music, it was necessary to turn the dial, or knob, on a radio to find a station. This was called tuning in.
Before an advertisement (which is also called a commercial, or an ad) came on the radio, the announcer often said, “Stay tuned for more great music after these commercials.”
It was a friendly way of saying, “Don’t change to another radio station during the advertisements.”
It is also used for television shows. “Stay tuned. Coming up at 6:00 p.m., we have news about tornado touchdowns in the southern part of the province.”
The expression stay tuned has spread in English, and is used to mean “wait, and this topic will be continued later”, or “keep watching; we have more coming soon.”
