What is the Meaning of the Expression
for English Language Learners (ELL) – those learning to speak English as a Second Language (ESL), or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
1. There was dead silence in the concert hall, and then the soprano began to sing the most beautiful song.
2. My grandmother asked my sister if she was ever going to start a family. For an uncomfortably long time there was dead silence in the room. Finally my sister looked at her husband, took a big breath and then told Grandma that the doctor said they couldn’t have children.
Extra: Because the expression dead silence is short and possibly because it has the word dead in it(!), it seems to be a favourite with artists, such as in the film Dead Silence with James Garner or the album Dead Silence by Billy Talent, or the horror movie Dead Silence made in 2007.
