What is the Meaning of the Expression
(v)be NO SIGN OF SOMEONE or SOMETHING?
English teaching for English Language Learners (ELL) who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Definition:
If there is no sign of someone, there is no evidence or indication of that person’s presence.
If there is no sign of something, it means you cannot see, or tell, that something is in existence.
Examples:
1. When I got home the other day the door of my apartment was unlocked. I was worried that someone had broken in while I was at work. But when I went inside, everything looked okay. Nothing appeared to be disturbed. There was no sign of a break-in. I guess I had forgotten to lock my door in the morning.
2. The mechanic said there is no sign of wear on my car’s brake pads. They look almost new.
3. The police did a thorough search of the area, but there is still no sign of the missing woman. Her family is worried that something terrible has happened to her.
