to be IN THE THICK OF something?
To be in the thick of something means to be involved in it, completely. You are right in the middle of it.
1. He says he is innocent, but based on the evidence the police have, he has been right in the thick of things from the beginning.
2. I started out volunteering with a charity group that I respect, but before long I found myself right in the thick of things. Now I go several times a week, and I am organizing their fundraiser this fall.
