GETTING WARMER
What is the Meaning of the Expression
YOU ARE GETTING WARMER?
English teaching for English Language Learners (ELL) who are learning to speak English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Definition:
becoming closer to discovering something
Example 1:
A: I have some exciting news!
B: What?
A: You have to guess.
B: Is your boyfriend going to move here?
A: No, but you’re getting warmer. My news has something to do with him. Guess again.
Example 2:
At Easter, my sister hides chocolate eggs around the house and our nieces and nephews have an Easter Egg Hunt.
When the children are far away from an egg, we call out, “No. No. You are cold.”
If they move farther away from a hidden egg, we say, “You’re getting colder! Now, you’re freezing!”
When they move towards a hidden egg, we call, “Now you’re getting warmer!”
When they are very close to an egg, we say, “Oh, now you’re really hot!”
