a person feels, or believes, that he or she cannot stop from acting in a certain way
Use COULDN’T for the past.
1. These shoes are so beautiful. I know I shouldn’t have bought them; they were expensive. But, I just couldn’t help it.
2. She couldn’t help herself. She knew she would regret looking at the car accident, but she did anyway.
Note: *Replace oneself with the correct reflexive pronoun such as: myself, yourself/yourselves, himself, herself, themselves, ourselves
